Ponta Delgada ,  October 10, 2017

Association of British Travel Agents Congress is extremely important to the promotion of the Azores Destination, says Marta Guerreiro

The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism stated in Ponta Delgada that the ABTA Congress - Association of British Travel Agents in the Azores is an "extremely important" event to the promotion of the destination. It contributes to the projection of the Region's visibility "with the aim of stabilising the existing tourism flows and attract more tourists."

Marta Guerreiro spoke at the opening session of the congress, which brought to the Region about 500 people, namely travel agents, tour operators and journalists from Britain.

According to Marta Guerreiro, these tourism professionals "will project the Azores further." This goal will be also achieved not only through a close contact with the diversity of experiences that the archipelago has to offer on land or at sea, but also through several products that are being developed on each island.

"This is why we are gathered here today with our full commitment to this event taking in the Azores, which have become a significant venue for the discussion, preparation and consolidation of the British market trend," stressed the Secretary for Tourism. She added that "the efforts increase of tourism flows are being extended throughout the year and show how the Azores can position themselves in the business tourism segment."

"In this context, the organisation of this event in the Azores is of special importance for us as the United Kingdom presents itself as one of the target markets of the Strategic Marketing Plan of the Azores Tourism with greater growth prospects," said Marta Guerreiro.

"This is the right opportunity to boost the growth of this market already identified by us. In this context, we should also invest in the intensive promotion of our tourism products and experiences through various actions," added the government official.

In her speech, she stressed that the definition of the Azores destination and its offer "are directly linked to the interests of British travellers, taking into account that the Azores are a lush green archipelago composed of nine islands located in the middle of the North Atlantic, with a temperate and mild climate all year round."

"The British are recognised as one of the people with the greatest desire to travel outside their country, which, together with the geographical proximity of the Azores, allows us to predict the good growth potential of this market for the Region," said the government official.

The Regional Secretary reinforced the fact that "the tourism sector is a driving force in wealth generation in the Region, which already has a much stronger tourist identity." In this regard, she pointing out that the Azores were in 2016 the region of the country" where overnight stays showed the greatest growth, registering an increase of 21% over the same period. Moreover, the Region has managed to overcome the 70 million-Euro barrier in terms of overall revenue, which represents a 30% increase over the previous year"; these trends remain unaltered in 2017.
