Azores are an example of sustained tourism growth, says Regional Director for Tourism

The Regional Director for Tourism stated on São Miguel that the Azores are "clearly" an example of a tourist destination where growth has been sustained, highlighting its development since 2014 through joint efforts between the Regional Government and private entities.

Filipe Macedo spoke Friday in Porto Formoso during a debate on "Tourism and Sustainability" under the Azores Burning Summer. According to him, "sustainability should be regarded under three pillars and, in this context; the Regional Government's actions are based on these three pillars, namely economic development and environmental and social issues."

As Filipe Macedo mentioned, the Regional Government has created a series of support measures for private agents in order to enhance the development of companies and the creation of products," while carrying out the revision and implementation of "management and planning programmes."

Moreover, the government official stressed the "concern to ensure an investment in professional training, whether initial or continuous, and in the training of people who wish to enter the sector," thus awarding "priority status to the tourism sector."

The Regional Director also highlighted the importance of "education for tourism through new generations so that the sustainability of tourism may become a strategy of economic and social development for the Region and be beneficial to people, namely in terms of employment."

"All these actions ensure the economic development we intend to achieve and the protection of environmental heritage, whether they are preventive measures or measures aimed at the correction of imbalances," said Filipe Macedo.
