Lagoa ,  April 12, 2017

"Sustainable Corvo" is an energy efficiency project that should be an example for the whole Region, says Regional Director for Energy

The Regional Director for Energy highlighted today the "Sustainable Corvo" project as an example that the Azorean Government intends to develop on other islands, encouraging the use of innovative solutions to render the archipelago energy efficient.

Andreia Carreiro spoke in Lagoa at the International Conference of OCTA Innovation - Association of Overseas Countries and Territories of the European Union. She stressed that this project, in partnership with Corvo Town Hall, allowed the "replacement of traditional gas-powered hot water production equipment for more energy efficient equipment."

In this regard, she added that about one hundred and fifty pieces of equipment in homes and office buildings on the island of Corvo were replaced for solar thermal systems and heat pumps for hot water production.

"After the implementation of the project, there was a decrease of about 50% in energy consumption on the island with significant savings in butane gas transportation. Moreover, the energy bill significantly reduced for consumers as they now produce energy from renewable sources for self-consumption," said Andreia Carreiro at the conference. The event is taking place at Nonagon - S. Miguel Science and Technology Park until Thursday.

The "Sustainable Corvo" project has contributed to a decrease in terms of external dependence on fossil fuels, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and allowing an increase in energy self-sufficiency.

"The Government is committed to studying the possibility of expanding this project to other islands from a technical, economical and environmental perspective in order to increase energy self-sufficiency in an innovative way and contribute to sustainable development of the Azores," said Andreia Carreiro.
