Secretary of the Presidency leads delegation of the Azores to the discussion of the European strategy for the ultraperipheries
A delegation of the Azores, led by the regional secretary of the Presidency, participates in the conference on “The future of the European strategy for the Ultraperipheral Regions” which is going to bring together next week, in Brussels, nearly 250 people in charge of the European ultraperipheral regions, of the governments of Portugal, France and Spain and of several communitarian institutions.
The forum passes to the 14th and 15th of May, being organized by the General Directorate of the Regional Politics of the European Commission.
The works to develop in the two days of discussion have as objective to analyze the Communication of the European Commission “Strategy for the ultraperipheral regions: Reached Progresses and Future Perspectives”, addressing, specially, for four areas considered priority in the development of the ultraperipheries – climatic changes, demographic evolution and migratory flows, agriculture and European sea politics.
The initiative of the General-Directorate of the Regional Politics intends to allow, also, the exchange of impressions and the discussion, at the highest level, between representatives of the European institutions, of the member States, of the ultraperipheral regions and of the respective societies.
The first day of works is reserved to a plenary session intended for the audition of the main actors on the subject in discussion and for which there are predicted interventions of the European commissioner for the Regional Politics, Danuta Hubner, of the representatives of the several ultraperipheral regions, among which the regional secretary of the Presidency, Vasco Cordeiro, and of representatives of the Slovene Presidency of the European Union, of the European Parliament, of the Economical and Social Committees of the Regions and of the Portuguese, Spanish and French states.
In the second day, the activities will be distributed in four ateliers connected with the main subjects of the Communication of the European Commission.
The Government of the Azores will present, in the panel “Sea Politics”, a communication of the regional director for European Affairs and External Cooperation, Rodrigo Oliveira, being predicted, also, an intervention of the director of the Department of Oceanography and Fishing of the University of the Azores, Ricardo Serrão Santos.
