Regional Director for Energy highlights importance of innovation to promote emerging practices in the sector

The Regional Director for Energy stressed in Lisbon that the Regional Government should include initiatives intended to disseminate emerging practices in the energy sector with the aim of promoting and fostering competitiveness as well as a low carbon economy in the archipelago.

"The Government of the Azores always seeks to include initiatives that focus on innovation, such as the case of the energy sector, accompanying the dissemination of new energy use practices and models," said Andreia Carreiro. She spoke on the sidelines of the conference "Digital Transformation in Energy - Low Voltage Concessions: Opportunities and Challenges," which essentially addressed cities and smart grids.

Andreia Carreiro stated that the Azores intend to "empower the energy sector as a vector of sustainable development based on an integrated approach that promotes the full exploitation of potential in terms of geography and natural resources."

"In the context of smart grids, energy end-users become the key to approaches based on dynamic demand responses insofar as they will have the opportunity to produce, store and consume and contribute the balance between demand and supply," said the government official. According to her, this "is a challenge for the reality of the archipelago of the Azores, composed of nine isolated and geographically dispersed energy micro-systems."

"The solution is to participate in sessions such as this one as they stimulate the flow of ideas and innovative practices among interested parties. It allows us to bring to the Region emerging, integrated and competitive technological solutions that will foster the sustainable development of the territory," said the government official.

Andreia Carreiro pointed out that there is "a clear commitment to promote the image of the Region as a nature destination of excellence. It highlights the position of the Azores as an example to follow in the context of island spaces as regards to their endogenous potential and natural resources for energy production and use."
