Lajes do Pico ,  October 10, 2019

Educational Programme for Energy Efficiency in the Azorean Schools reached about 1,000 students in 2018/2019 school year

The Regional Director for Energy revealed today that the Educational Programme for Energy Efficiency in Azorean Schools, which aims "to call the attention of youngsters for the issue of energy in a playful, relaxed and captivating manner," has already reached about 1,000 Azorean students, through more than 50 sessions held in the 2018/2019 school year.

“This innovative educational resource in the Azores is implemented through an activity designated as "Dreni," whose first supplement was launched in February this year. It stemmed from the need to create a programme to disseminate among youngsters the importance of energy in the context of climate change and how we are countering its effects in the Azores with the increasing use of natural resources such as wind, water and geothermal power to produce clean energy,” said Andreia Carreiro.

In this context, she stated that this project is developed by the Regional Directorate for Energy in conjunction with Azorina - Society for Environmental Management and Nature Conservation. According to her, it “consists of three supplements that address, through cartoons and interactive activity sheets, issues related to energy efficiency, renewable energy sources in the Azores and electric mobility.”

The Regional Director spoke in the context of the presentation of Supplement 3 of the Education Programme for Energy Efficiency in Azorean Schools dedicated to Electric Mobility. This session was aimed at elementary level students enrolled at Lajes do Pico Basic Education and Secondary School and was attended by the Regional Director for Education, Rodrigo Reis.

"Dreni" falls within the package of educational offerings under "The Park Goes to School" activities, being available for implementation in all regional schools at the preschool and elementary education levels.

For scheduling and organising the activity in these classes, interested teachers should contact the local Environmental-awareness Raising Centre.

They can also download educational resources by accessing the Educating for the Environment and Sustainability portal at http://educarparaoambiente.azores.gov.pt/.
