Government of the Azores marks International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination with initiatives targeted at youngsters

The Government of the Azores will mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination next Saturday, March 21, with a programme comprising several activities addressed at children and teenagers from Terceira.

This initiative aims to provide moments of leisure and learning by stimulating the imagination and creativity of younger audiences, promoting the contact with other cultural realities and instilling in them, from an early age, the notion of diversity and interculturalism.

The event will be take place at the headquarters of Sport Club Lusitânia in Angra do Heroísmo from 2 PM to 7 PM. The activity programme includes musical performances by immigrants living on Terceira, traditional games from various countries, storytelling and the representation of a theatre play depicting the struggle for the elimination of racial discrimination and a space for scientific experiments.

The initiative, with free admission, is promoted by the Cabinet of the Regional Under Secretary of the Presidency for External Relations, through the Regional Directorate for Communities. It falls under the policies for the promotion of intercultural education among youngsters in a Region that is inhabited by immigrants from 75 different nationalities.

Established by the UN, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is celebrated on March 21 in a clear reference to the Sharpeville massacre that occurred in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1960. It aims to raise the awareness of the international community as well as to increase efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination in favour fairer and united society that will fight against racism and xenophobia.
