Regional Government launches collection of chronicles about the Azorean community in the USA

The Regional Government promotes the launch of the book “À Sombra da Saudade - Vivências e Reflexões Portuguesas na Califórnia” by Diniz Borges on the islands of Terceira and São Miguel.

The initiative is promoted by the Regional Directorate for the Communities in partnership with the City Council of Angra do Heroísmo and the Letras Lavadas Publisher. It will take place at the City Hall of Angra do Heroísmo on Sunday, February 2 at 8 pm, and at the Letras Lavadas Bookshop in Ponta Delgada on the following day at 6 pm.

The work presents the author's chronicles published over the years in several Portuguese-language newspapers, with his reflections on the communities of Azorean emigrants and descendants in the USA. the author places special emphasis on the role of associations, the teaching of the Portuguese language, the Azorean presence in political life, and to the experiences of emigrants and their successive generations.

Currently, he is a professor at the California State University, Fresno, and is the Director of the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute (PBBI) at the same university and at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia.

He is a contributor to several Azorean newspapers and Portuguese-language newspapers in the USA and Canada, as well as to several radio stations. He heads several organisations, including PALCUS - Portuguese American Leadership Council, LAEF - Luso-American Education Foundation, Tulare - Angra Sister City Foundation and CPAC - California Portuguese-American Coalition.
