Regional Director for the Communities defends more open diaspora associations to the world and young people

The Regional Director for the Communities defended in the United States of America the importance of the Azorean Diaspora's community associations being “open to the world” from a “comprehensive and congregating” perspective.

Paulo Teves spoke at the closing session of the Great Feast of the Holy Spirit of New England, considering that this important manifestation of the Azorean People is “an island representation within the US territory, where each Azorean feels at home.” On the occasion, he also stressed that, "while recalling customs and traditions, these festivities also invite and welcome the local society to share these same values and to actively participate in them."

“As we know, the various diaspora institutions play a crucial role in fostering meetings, memories and traditions. This is major goal of their action with considerable emotional significance that has been reinforced over time and generations, thus paying tribute to each of the nine Azorean islands," said the Regional Director.

In the context of 'Azoreanity' and the Region's current reality, Paulo Teves believes they can increasingly “accompany younger generations, address their concerns and aspirations and harness their enormous potential and determination, not only in the dynamics of associations but also in their involvement in the development of parents' and grandparents' homeland."

According to the Regional Director for the Communities, “open and proactive associations will give rise to new generations. They will be those inheriting the identity of their ancestors in their geographical realities and those who will build their future between them, contributing to the affirmation of 'Azoreanity' and raising our Region to prominence."

“This past weekend, the city of Fall River was the venue of many emotional meetings of families and friends, showcasing the pride that keeps our identity alive. the event also promoted the participation of many who, not being born in the Azores, share the same geographical space, which demonstrates the good and successful integration of our diaspora," stated the government official.

During this visit to the USA to participate as guest of honour in the 33th edition of the Great Feast of the Holy Spirit of New England, Paulo Teves attended the opening session of the lights, the blessing and distribution of “pensões” (charitable meat offerings) and in the "Bodo de Leite" (distribution of milk and sweet bread). Moreover, he also participated in the Solemn Mass as well as in the Procession; the latter is annually attended by thousands of people, including many Azorean emigrants residing in the USA.
