Regional Director for the Communities attends 100th anniversary of Hudson Portuguese Club in the USA

The Regional Director for the Communities participates in the centennial celebrations of the Hudson Portuguese Club in Massachusetts, USA, next Saturday, May 4.

Founded in 1919, the Portuguese Hudson Club is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to promote Portuguese language and culture as well as the civic participation of its members in the society to which they belong.

This institution brings together several Azoreans and Azorean descendants residing in that State. It also develops various activities aimed at its members and families, namely the provision of educational opportunities, Portuguese language classes, the promotion of charity events, the celebrations of the Holy Spirit Festivities and the Our Lady of Fatima Feast, and the organisation of sporting and cultural events such as the Annual Golf Tournament.

In the context of his visit to the United States of America, Paulo Teves also meets with MAPS - Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers, an institution belonging to the International Network of Social Service Organisations. It is primarily intended to eliminate barriers and increase the access of Portuguese-speaking communities of that State to health, education and social services.

Founded in 1993, following the merger of the Somerville Portuguese American League and the Cambridge Organization for Portuguese Americans, MAPS directs its action to immigrants from eight countries, including Portugal.

The Regional Director for the Communities also visits the Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies of Rhode Island College. This is an interaction centre for the benefit of students enrolled in this educational institution and the Rhode Island Portuguese-speaking community, whose main goal is to promote academic and cultural research in the areas of Portuguese language and culture.

Also in the context of this visit to the State of Massachusetts, Paulo Teves meets with the Board of the House of the Azores of New England, an institution representing the community of Azorean descent and this US region.

The House of the Azores of New England, founded in 1982, annually promotes a series of cultural promotion and dissemination activities as well as training and information initiatives, such as citizenship classes, dissemination of the Azores, and the provision of social support to its members.
