Regional Director for Communities stresses role of Houses of the Azores in disseminating and promoting the Region

The Regional Director for Communities stated in Gravataí, Brazil, that the Government of the Azores has "met the needs and aspirations of the Houses of the Azores," recognising the "important role in the congregation of the Azorean people as well as in the dissemination and promotion of the Region in the countries where they are implemented.”

Paulo Teves spoke Wednesday in the celebration of the 13th anniversary of the House of the Azores of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. He defended that this institution, as well as dozens in the Azorean Diaspora, "has conducted, throughout its existence, an effective study and survey on the Azorean presence, which is over two and a half centuries. It is embodied in various aspects of the local culture that demonstrate its importance in the construction and development of this State. "

Founded in March 2003, the House of the Azores of Rio Grande do Sul aim to disseminate the cultural and social values of the Azores as well as their image and potential, promoting exchanges between the Region, this Brazilian State and other Azorean communities in different areas and the development of projects that bring both sides of the Atlantic closer.

"The Government of the Azores has developed initiatives and implemented strategies to bring the Houses of the Azores and emigrant communities closer to the Region," Paulo Teves said, adding that, in this context, the Training Course for Young People from the Communities will take place in July on several islands of the archipelago,

Paulo Teves stressed that "these projects represent a common and concerted agenda between the Government and the Houses of the Azores with regard to the priorities set by both entities."

The Regional Director for Communities also stated that the meeting aims to "provide young people from the communities with information and knowledge about the Azores of today", providing conditions so that they may "promote and disseminate the geographical, social and cultural reality of the Azores."

The celebrations of the anniversary of the House of the Azores of Rio Grande do Sul  were attended by representatives of Azorean centres of the municipalities of Gravataí, Pelotas, Santo António  da Patrulha, Viamão, Pintada Island, Vacaria, Cachoeirinha, Cambarã do Sul, Triunfo and Porto Alegre, as well as by the Vice-Consul of Portugal in Porto Alegre, Adriana Ribeiro.

In the context of the visit is to Rio Grande do Sul, Paulo Teves meets today with Portuguese Cultural Institute of Porto Alegre and Rio Grande do Sul Book Chamber. The day ends with a scheduled meeting with the community of Santo António da Patrulha.
