Regional Director for Communities says Azorean diaspora makes the Region proud

The Regional Director for Communities stressed yesterday in Angra do Heroísmo that the Azorean diaspora is "a source pride for the Region" insofar as these solid, industrious, active, entrepreneurial and united communities that contribute to the development of the Azores and the host communities as well."

Speaking during the panel on "Azorean diaspora and identity: the path to enhance the potential of the Azores?” under the 1st edition of the Summer University, an initiative organised by the Azorean Institute of European Studies and International Relations, Paulo Teves stressed the role of Azorean communities as an important "aspect of ‘Azoreanity’."

"Azorean emigrant communities have the best we can offer: the people and their hard work, dedication and spirit of solidarity, and the preservation and dissemination of our identity," said Paulo Teves.

The Regional Director for Communities also highlighted the existence of a fruitful development of relations between the Region and its diaspora communities. The government official defended that "they embody their culture of origin, foster economic and political relations, strengthen family and social ties, and defend regional interests" abroad.

Paulo Teves also revealed that the importance of active participation of Azorean emigrants and their descendants in host communities so that they may be able to defend their interests and those of the archipelago.

"The Azorean community is committed to developing its host society and stimulating the potential of associations in the diaspora. It has earned the recognition of host communities," said the Regional Director.

Paulo Teves also stressed that the Government of the Azores has promoted and supported, over the years, numerous initiatives that have contributed to the "opening and to social, cultural and economic assertion of the Azores" in the diaspora.

Concluding, the Regional Director for Communities noted that we are witnessing the "revitalisation of associations, which will be able to transmit a valuable cultural legacy to forthcoming generations. In this context, he reminded that each Azorean and Azorean descendant "is a true representative and ambassador of the Azores, either at home or at work."
