Azorean Government marks International Day of the Fight for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

The Government of the Azores marks Tuesday, March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination with an initiative aimed at informing the society about the importance of migration and the role they play in the development of social, cultural and economic development of host societies. The event takes place in Horta.

Promoted by the Regional Directorate for Communities in partnership with AIPA - Azores Immigrant Association, the initiative includes the presentation of a documentary, immigrant testimonies and the performance of a Cape Verdean immigrant residing on Faial.

The event takes place at João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archive, starting at 9 PM; admission is free.

In order to raise the awareness of the international community for the importance of intensifying efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination towards an ever more fairer and united society and to combat possible expressions of racism and xenophobia, the UN has instituted March 21 as International day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This date is a reference to the Sharpeville massacre that took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1960.
