Government of the Azores promotes book presentation on dances from Central Group islands

The Government of the Azores promotes the launch of the book "Vertentes das Danças Açorianas – Tradição do Grupo Central de Ilhas" (Aspects of Azorean Dances - Traditions of Central Group Islands) by Flávio Azeredo at João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archives. It identifies the rituals that have led the inhabitants of Central Group islands to promote their choreographic traditions.

In this work, supported by the Regional Government through the Regional Directorate for Communities, the author also highlights the influences that marked dances and the way how they are incorporated, giving rise to new choreographies. The book will also be presented at the headquarters of Terceira Regional Dance and Song Group in Angra do Heroísmo on August 2.

Flávio Azeredo is also the author of "Herança Açoriana nas Danças Tradicionais do Rio Grande do Sul" (Azorean Heritage in the Traditional Dances of Rio Grande do Sul). Born in the city of Montenegro in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, he is a descendant of Azoreans. Currently, he holds the position of professor and coordinator of the Physical Education and Health Centre at the University of Santa Cruz do Sul. He is also a researcher and scholar of Azorean folklore and its presence in Southern Brazil.

Throughout his career, he has received many awards, including the Fernando Pessoa prize, the Portuguese Cultural Institute (2007), first place in the Classic Waltz contest - OKTOBERFEST (2007) and the designation of "Professional of the Year" by Ibia Newspaper in the years 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2010.

With this initiative, the Government of the Azores aims to promote and disseminate studies and research on Azorean culture and traditions by regional authors and of Azorean descent living in the Diaspora.
