Azorean diaspora brings people and regions closer, says Regional Director for the Communities

The Regional Director for the Communities highlighted in Florianópolis, Brazil, the "importance" of the Azorean diaspora in "bringing peoples and regions closer."

"Its intervention capacity, the way it interacts with various institutions and the work carried out to acknowledge the value of our presence in different spaces are crucial to a fruitful relation between the Azores and the Azorean communities," said Paulo Teves.

The Regional Director added that this relation has “intensified into new areas of cooperation,” such as the case of sport.

Paulo Teves spoke at a meeting with a group of young under-11 athletes from Avaí Football Club at Dr. Aderbal Ramos da Silva - Ressacada Stadium. These athletes will travel to the Azores in April to participate in the Children's Football Tournament, at the invitation of União Micaelense Club and with the Regional Government's support.

At this meeting, also attended by athletes' parents and the club's technical management staff, the Regional Director pointed out that this initiative aims to "recognise the importance of the diaspora and strengthen its ties to the Azores, in addition to providing young people with a very direct contact with the Region's reality."

Currently, the Avaí Football Club is the champion of Santa Catarina, a championship that this team has won 17 times, as well as of the Brazilian C series. It was founded in the city of Florianópolis in 1923 and                                     has several male and female levels, being the first time it will be in the Azores to represent the Azorean diaspora in the regional tournament.

On the first day of this visit to Brazil, the Regional Director for the Communities attended last Thursday the closing session of the cultural activities promoted by the House of the Azores of the State of Rio Grande do Sul in the city of Gravataí.

On the occasion, Paulo Teves highlighted the efforts towards the recovery of the Azorean presence undertaken by that institution, which "has brought together so many other organisations that highlight the importance of the Azorean people in this state of southern Brazil."

“We are pleased to note that one of the goals that guide the Casa dos Açores in Rio Grande do Sul is focused on the dissemination of today's Azores, both with schools and with wider audiences, as was the example of the trip organised this year to four islands of our archipelago,” said the Regional Director.

"The greater the knowledge of our islands, the greater the recognition of our diaspora in the world, which is undoubtedly an enormous source of pride for all of us," said the government official.

Founded in 2003, the House of the Azores of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, has as its mission the dissemination, protection, recovery and promotion of Azorean culture and the interests of Azorean descendants of Rio Grande do Sul. It plays a relevant role in highlighting this Brazilian state as one of the greatest manifestations of Azorean culture in the world, where the Azorean presence dates back to the mid-18th century.

Throughout the year, this institution promotes the "Night at the Manor House of the House of the Azores of Rio Grande do Sul," a project supported by the Gravataí Municipal Culture Fund.
