Government presented Forest Management Project for Corvo waste land

The Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Forestry will move ahead with the forest management of waste land on the island of Corvo, covering a total area of 225 hectares. It is intended to promote the practice of herding and the protection and management of the island’s water resources.

The project was presented during the Farmer’s Day on the island of Corvo, an event attended by the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry.
The landscape structuring for the future management of animal husbandry activities, the increase of forage production in terms of quantity and quality and the promotion of animal well-being are some of the primarily goals of the project presented by the Azorean Government.

With this initiative, it will be possible to control the torrential flow in streams, increase the interception of precipitation and reduce erosion and soil loss.
According to a survey conducted by the Regional Directorate for Forest Resources, the Corvo waste land covers an area of approximately 637 hectares, stretching from an altitude of 300 metres to the highest point of the island, Morro dos Homens, at an altitude of 720 metres.

In addition, the Regional Government also presented the construction project of the Fundão agricultural road with an extension of 360 metres which is intended to connect the rural road to the Caldeirão Regional Road.

The works include the expansion of the roadway (from 2.5 to 4 metres), the construction of a concrete pavement with a 322 m extension as well as the construction of support walls and a fence.

This work will directly benefit 30 farms and an area of 100 hectares of pastures, representing a public investment of about 400 thousand Euros.
