Sustainable tourism under debate in the "Lands of Priolo" on São Miguel Island

The Government of the Azores promotes the 2nd Forum on the Renewal of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (ECST) in the Lands of Priolo under the renewal of the application to this international distinction. The event takes place at Nordeste Forest Dissemination Centre, São Miguel Island, on October 6.

It aims to discuss the actions to be developed by the project partners in the next five years towards the promotion of sustainability of tourism in an area with almost half of its territory included in the Island Natural Park, covering the municipalities of Nordeste and Povoação.

The program includes the presentation of the results achieved in the first five years of implementation of ECST as well as of a new itinerary on Conservation in the Lands of Priolo.

The initiative also features a workshop for the definition of goals and actions and the organisation of guided tours of tourist interest to Priolo Environmental Centre and Nordeste Forest Nursery.

Registrations are free but mandatory. They are open to all those who wish to contribute to the definition of the Action Plan for Sustainable Tourism in the Lands of Priolo and should be made at the address: http://www.azores.gov.pt/GRA/srrn-cets.

The European Charter for Sustainable Tourism is a tool designed, evaluated and certified by the EUROPARC Federation with the aim of promoting the development of sustainable tourism in protected areas.

In the "Lands of Priolo," the ECST established partnerships with the Regional Directorates for the Environment, Forest Resources and Tourism, the Nordeste Town Hall, the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA), the Azores Geopark and the Azores Microbial Observatory.

The current Action Plan for Sustainable Tourism in the Lands of Priolo (2012-2016) has enabled the implementation of 38 actions, of which 25 are completed and 13 are still ongoing. It has managed to enhance coordination between partner organisations in terms of tourism promotion and territorial management, involving tourism entrepreneurs in the definition of goals and priorities.
