Ponta Delgada ,  May 27, 2020

Regional Government continues investments in agricultural infrastructures to help farmers facing future challenges, says João Ponte

The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry stated today that the Regional Government continues, with total determination, the planned investments towards the modernisation of agricultural infrastructures. According to him, they are fundamental to reduce costs incurred by farms, to improve farmers' working conditions and to ensure the sustainability of one of the main economic activities in the Region.

"Without prejudice to the additional support aimed at the agricultural sector for income improvement that has been approved by the Regional Government, it is essential to continue public investment in the construction of agricultural infrastructures; not only for what they represents in terms of improving working conditions, but also for the sign it gives in terms of confidence in the future of Azorean," said João Ponte. The government official spoke on the sidelines of the visit to agricultural infrastructure works in the parish of Sete Cidades, municipality of Ponta Delgada.

Despite all the investment in roads, water supply and electrification of farms, amounting to 27 million Euros in this legislative period, i.e., 14 million Euros more than in the previous term, the government official considered that "we need to continue investing to provide more and better conditions so that farmers can work even better."

The Regional Secretary assured that all financial resources available under the PRORURAL+ programme for investment in agricultural infrastructures will be used in the current legislative period. In this regard, he mentioned that the Regional Directorate for Forest Resources and IROA - Regional Institute of Agrarian Planning are already preparing studies and projects regarding future investments to be made in the next term.

"These are strategic investments that have been identified with the contribution of producers' organisations. It is the case of the project to collect water from the surplus of Sete Cidades Lake with the aim of improving water supply to dairy farms within the Agrarian Planning Perimeter (POA) of Ponta Delgada, which will be presented in due course," said João Ponte.

The government official also pointed out that, like farmers, public works in the agricultural sector have not stopped in recent months, as evidenced by what we are seeing today in Sete Cidades.

The Regional Secretary visited the Arrebentões Rural Road where works are taking place, under the responsibility of the Regional Directorate for Forest Resources, covering an extension of 1,230 metres and almost two dozen farms. This intervention represents an investment of more than 560 thousand Euros.

João Ponte also visited the site of the construction works of a reservoir near the entrance of the parish, with capacity for 250 cubic metres of water, a 35 thousand Euro work carried out by IROA that is running at a good pace. During this visit, the Regional Secretary was accompanied by the Regional Director for Forest Resources, Anabela Isidoro, the President of the Board of Directors of IROA, Ricardo Silva, and the President of the Parish Council of Sete Cidades, Cidália Pavão.
