Government of the Azores expands professional categories eligible for FUNDOPESCA

The proposed revision that was carried out by the Regional Natural Resources to the legislation regulating the allocation of funds under the Azores Fishers' Salary Compensation Fund will now cover professionals who have been, so far, unable to benefit from FUNDOPESCA.

The information was revealed on Tuesday by the Regional Secretary for Natural Resources at the Legislative Assembly of the Azores during the debate on a proposal for amendment to FundoPesca presented by BE in 2012. Luís Neto Viveiros considered the latter to be more reductive in several aspects compared to the legislation in force.

In addition to including other professionals in the fishing sector, such as catchers or onshore workers, the legislation prepared by the Government of the Azores will not limit the activation of the Salary Compensation Fund either in terms of its duration or in terms of the amounts allocated.

According to Luís Neto Viveiros, the process for the allocation of financial support should be "always" started when there are situations which, regardless of their nature, prevent fishers from working.

The current structure of the Administration Board of FundoPesca will also be under revision. In this context, there is the possibility of consulting institutions such as the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of Azores on this proposed revision. The representatives of the fisheries will continue to be part of the Administration Board.
