Calheta de S. Jorge ,  April 02, 2016

Enhancing classification of "Fajãs" of S. Jorge Biosphere Reserve is everyone's mission, says Neto Viveiros

The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and the Environment stated in Calheta that the recent UNESCO classification, approved unanimously and by acclamation, of "Fajãs" of S. Jorge as Biosphere Reserve should be enhanced by everyone, including public authorities, companies and the population.

"Now, it is up to all of us to enhance this international recognition, reinforcing what we stand for as the 'Azores Biosphere' brand and considering the existence of four reserves in the Region," said the Regional Secretary, who spoke on behalf of the President Government on "Meeting the Fajãs."

In his speech delivered at the initiative promoted by Calheta Town Hall, Luís Neto Nurseries has launched a challenge for the use of public incentives, such as those available in the Azores for the "maintenance of traditional landscapes integrated in protected areas, namely  vineyard landscapes and orchards in "currais" (plots protected by stone walls), 'fajãs' and terraces."

For the Regional Secretary, "the relevant natural, landscape and cultural values embodied in these territories must be enhanced, being vital elements in the tourism promotion of the Region as a nature destination."

"The designation of Biosphere Reserve of "Fajãs is an important contribution to the effective understanding of the social and economic value of our natural and cultural heritage as well as the benefits of sustainability, combined with the new concepts of green economy and blue economy," said Neto Viveiros.

The Regional Secretary also stressed the involvement of the two municipalities of São Jorge and the living forces of São Jorge in the application process initiated by the Government of the Azores, contributing to its "success."
