Good Forestry Practices

       1.  The use of species and origins adapted to the season;

2.  The use of quality plants grown in the Regional Directorate for Forest Resources' nurseries. Where plants and/or seeds are purchased outside of the Regional Directorate for Forest Resources, these must be certified to be in accordance with the species set forth in Decree-Law no. 239/92 of 27 July and respective legal regulations;

3.  Taking advantage of natural regeneration in forestry production, including it in the project goals whenever it provides suitable vegetation;

4.  The creation of strips or bands of plantation discontinuity, preferably alongside roads and natural dividing areas, watercourses and along ridges and in valleys, using, in particular, tree or bush species of low flammability and combustibility, herbaceous communities or even keeping the natural vegetation;

5.  Do not turn the soil over in the protective strips alongside watercourses;

6.  The conservation of stands of tree, shrub and/or notable indigenous species, especially those indicated in Article 10 (c) of Regional Decree 55/81 of 18 December and classified plants, according to Decree-Law 28.468/38 of 15 February and associated legislation;

7.  The conservation of habitats classified according to the directive on habitats, whether they are forest habitats or not;

8.  The non-localised breaking up of ground must follow the contours of the land; nonetheless, it may not follow the contours if it is immediately followed by final furrowing in accordance with the contours of the land;

9.  In closely-packed forestry - < 3 m between rows - and on slopes greater than 20%, keep the existing vegetation for a minimum of 2 years, using belts of natural vegetation with a minimum width of 0.5 m, following the contours;

10. In widely-spaced forestry - > 3 m between rows - keep the existing vegetation for a minimum of 2 years, using belts of unworked natural vegetation in all rows, with a minimum width of 1 m, following the contours;

11. Only use phytopharmaceutical products approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Forestry and specified in the integrated protection list. The retention of the proof of purchase of fertiliser and phytopharmaceutical products is always obligatory;

12. Phytopharmaceutical products must not be used within 10 m water lines or abstraction sites. They must be handled and stored in dry and waterproofed areas, similarly a minimum distance of 10 m from water lines or abstraction sites;

13. Collect all waste - packaging (including plant containers, plastic bags, boxes of all types, etc.), product leftovers, machinery washwater and used oils - from the forestry station site, product preparation and forest areas, and dispose of at appropriate sites;

14. Do not destroy sites of archaeological, heritage or cultural value, as well as traditional infrastructures (stone walls, wells, sluices, etc.) that are similarly of value;

15. In partnership with the competent authorities - local council, Regional Directorate for the Environment - remove rubble and other waste that may contaminate the species to be planted.
