Tree Adventure Park on São Miguel Island falls within regional strategy to create added value for Azorean forests

The Regional Director for Forest Resources stated in Ponta Delgada that the installation of a Tree Adventure Park on the island of São Miguel is falls within the regional strategy to create added value for Azorean forests, while contributing to their protection and sustainable use.

“This private project to be installed next to Furnas lake, municipality of Povoação, fits perfectly into the regional strategy to create added value, protect and promote the sustainable use of our forest, besides enhancing its economic and social value,” said Anabela Isidoro.

The Regional Director spoke at the signing ceremony of the contract for the installation of the first Tree Adventure Park in the Azores, which was chaired by the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry, João Ponte.

Anabela Isidoro stressed that forests are a structural element of the regional landscape that occupy one third of the territory, emphasising that the project developed by the company Mystery Circle is yet another element that will enhance the multiple uses of the forest.

According to the Regional Director, it is “an environmentally friendly project, whose ecological footprint is minimal,” involving very specific requirements that must be met, such as the mandatory use of endogenous materials.

In turn, she added that this park will create up to nine jobs in the first three years of operation, with the opening scheduled for 2021.

“In the Azores, we are going beyond the mere conservation of forests by investing in sustainable management, reforestation and the certification of cryptomeria wood. “Accordingly, this project is a good example of the growing enthusiasm for nature and its enormous potential,” said Anabela Isidoro.

The Tree Adventure Park will be installed on 1.6 hectare plot of land located in Mata da Grená Wood, creating a new space for forest recreation activities on the island of São Miguel.

Tree Adventure Parks, consisting of a series of physical challenges accessible to people of various ages, have become a worldwide trend, adding social, economic and environmental value to the places where they are installed.

In a safe and controlled environment, visitors will have the opportunity to cross different types of platforms mounted on trees, such as stairs and suspended bridges, among other types of structures, providing a unique experience in the heart of nature, without damaging it.
