Azores cheese with great potential for sale in national and international markets, says Regional Director for Agriculture

The Regional Director for Agriculture, José Élio Ventura, highlighted today the great export potential of the Azores cheese, both in the national and international markets for its quality, durability and diversity.

"This is a product that creates more employment and has durability. In the context of   the dairy sector, it is perhaps the best way to overcome the sea barrier that separates us and the maritime boundaries of each of our islands," said José Élio Ventura. He spoke at the session of Portugal Cheese Competition 2018, an event promoted by the National Federation of Dairy Industries (ANIL) that took place in Lisbon.

On the occasion, José Élio Ventura stated that Portugal annually imports 50 thousand tonnes of cheese out of the 130 thousand tonnes consumed in the country. These figures demonstrate "the good opportunities and the existing business opportunities."

"We have the obligation to fill this gap and the duty to seize opportunities, innovate, conquer the loyalty of consumers and count on the indispensable patriotism of the commercial segment of cheese production," said the Regional Director for Agriculture.

José Élio Ventura stressed that the regional agricultural sector is preparing for new challenges and for the competitive market.

"Given the efforts and experience of Azorean dairy producers, the investments made in the modernisation of farms, agro-industries, animal welfare and genetic enhancement, without neglecting our exceptional conditions for production, we believe that we are on the right track," said the Regional Director. According to him, there are farmers in the Azores who like what they do every day.

Moreover, José Élio Ventura urged industries to follow market trends and consumer preferences on a regular basis. They should seek innovate, promote and increase the export of dairy products, also to foreign countries, especially to newly opened markets such as the case of Canada.

"The Regional Government has done everything to ensure the success of cheese production and the sustainability of farming in the Azores, which has unique natural conditions for milk production," said the Regional Director.

This year, more than 200 cheeses were in competition. The Azores presented 21 different types of cheese through eight operators, having been distinguished with various first prizes and honourable mentions.

"This is another moment for the affirmation of the diversity and specificity of cheeses produced in Portugal insofar as many of them showcase the tradition, history and know-how of our people," said José Élio Ventura.
