Vasco Cordeiro visits areas affected by bad weather on São Miguel

Since the early after afternoon, the President of the Government is visiting the areas on the southern coast of São Miguel that were most affected by the bad weather that hit the Azores in order to become better informed about the damages caused by strong winds and rough sea.

Vasco Cordeiro, who was accompanied by the Secretary for Tourism and Transport and the Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology, started this round at the Port Authorities, where he learned of the damages occurred in the head of the jetty of Ponta Delgada Port.

Then, the President of the Government visited the coastal area of the village of São Roque; he was accompanied by the Mayor of Ponta Delgada and the President of the Village Council.

Speaking to journalists, Vasco Cordeiro confirmed that the head of the jetty of Ponta Delgada Port is damaged and that there are several losses in homes, as result of flooding from sea water, and damages to buildings, including some schools.

"We are now going through this high tide phase, which has consequences in terms of wave height," the President of the Government said, pointing out that it is too early to assess damages.

"We are covering the entire southern coast of São Miguel that was hit the hardest," Vasco Cordeiro said, adding that he has been in permanent contact with other members of the Government who are monitoring the situation on Terceira and Faial.

The President of the Government also reinforced the warning that was issued by Civil Protection Services so that citizens may follow the recommendations, which are important to prevent further damage.

During this round through all municipalities on the southern coast of São Miguel, Vasco Cordeiro has been in contact with the respective mayors. He has already visited the municipality of Lagoa accompanied by Cristina Decq Mota.
