Vasco Cordeiro visits Cargo Terminal works to improve export capacity of Terceira and the Azores

The President of the Government began today the Government's three-day visit to Terceira, where he learned about the progress of the construction works of the Cargo Terminal of Lajes Civil Airport, a 4.6 million-Euro investment that will improve the export capacity of this island and the Region as well.

“This is a very important work for the economy of Terceira Island, but also in the regional context, as it strengthens the Region's export capacity with the creation of adequate conditions for this purpose,” said Vasco Cordeiro.

After visiting the works, which are being carried out on time and within the stipulated budget, the President of the Government stated that they are expected to be completed and ready to go into operation by mid-2020.

“As it is the case of Terceira Island and throughout the Region, there is several works in different stages of implementation with the goal of strengthening economic activity,” said Vasco Cordeiro. In this regard, he pointed out the example of the intervention taking place at Pipas Port in Angra do Heroísmo, which will include the construction of a RoRo ramp; the respective public tender has already been launched.

“This type of infrastructure is important because it helps our economy and our entrepreneurs in generating wealth and creating jobs for our Region," stated the President of the Government.

“We have a priority and urgent situation: the reestablishment and reinforcement of the safety conditions at Lajes das Flores Port. However, there are other interventions arising from the passage of hurricane Lorenzo and others unrelated with this situation that cannot stop and will continue to move forward.”

According to him, the National Government's decision to ensure 85 percent of the approximately 330 million Euros of damage caused by this hurricane is very important, not only for the Azores but for the entire country.

“The meaning of the decision taken by the National Government yesterday is not limited to the Azores. In fact, it has a deeper meaning for the country as a whole, from the standpoint of regional cohesion and the way we organise ourselves as a country," noted the President of the Government.
