Vasco Cordeiro urges Azorean youth to take interest in European project and in its defence

The President of the Government marked today the Europe Day with an open class at Antero de Quental Secondary School in Ponta Delgada, where he urged Azorean youth to take interest in the European Union as a collective project that is much more than a means for the Azores to get financial aid.
"This EU project is not and cannot be reduced to just a matter of financial aid and Community support. The sense of belonging to this project cannot be a meaning that only concerns to what we have to gain from this standpoint," stressed Vasco Cordeiro.
At the meeting with students, which culminated in a debate on European issues, the President of the Government also stressed that the European project is based on important values of peace, harmony, freedom, progress, development and cohesion among European peoples.
"All the financial aid and development programmes are very important, but the European Union is not just that. It has to go much further than this and it has to convey the idea that it is possible to understand each other in a continent that has been destroyed by wars," Vasco Cordeiro stressed, recalling that Europe is now living in one of the longest periods of peace, progress and development of its history.
In this meeting with students enrolled in Science and Humanities courses, the President of the Government also stressed that the EU "has its masters," who are the European citizens, and, in this context, urged Azorean youth "to take care of what is ours."
"The most important form is through voting, but this participation also involves the interest in this European Union that is yours. If it works well, citizens will reap its benefits. However, it works badly, citizens will suffer its consequences," said the government official.
In this "conversation" with Antero de Quental School students, the President of the Government also pointed out that the European project needs to be defended, first and foremost, by stating that Brussels, at a technical and political level, must pay attention to the real concerns of European citizens.
"Moreover, it must be defended from the movements that are increasingly emerging, which advocate for isolationism and rejection of the European project," warned Vasco Cordeiro. According to him, the best defence strategy involves the participation of citizens in the European project.
"Even with all the shortcomings that the European Union has - and there are some - we will always be better and more successful with the European Union than without it," stated the President of the Government.
"We have much to give to the European Union. This is a fundamental idea about how we should think our relation with the European Union," concluded Vasco Cordeiro." On the occasion, the President of the Government took the opportunity to highlight the role of José Medeiros Ferreira and Jaime Gama as ministers of Foreign Affairs in the process of Portugal's accession to the then European Economic Community (EEC).
