Vasco Cordeiro invites social partners and political parties to analyse post-pandemic phase

The President of the Government assured today that all resources and skills are being mobilised to respond to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and announced that he will invite social partners and political parties to analyse the next phase of economic recovery and reinforcement of social support measures in the Region.

“The daily evolution of this pandemic, on a global scale, does not allow us to make any realistic projection as to its end. Nevertheless, we are mobilising all our resources and all our skills - everything we have at our disposal - to face this situation and to minimise the impact that it may have, from the outset, on our economy and our society,” said Vasco Cordeiro at the Standing Committee of the Legislative Assembly.

Participating in this meeting by video conference to clarify the members of the Regional Assembly on the measures already taken, as well as others to be implemented in the Azores in several areas, the President of the Government stated that the permanent and daily monitoring of the effects of this crisis is being carried out in order to adjust measures, both in the regional economy as a whole and in the support for companies and families.

"Despite all this uncertainty, it is also necessary, as we approach the stabilisation of this situation, to think about what will follow next, from the perspective of reactivating the economy and supporting those who are in a more fragile situation," said Vasco Cordeiro.

“In this context, I will invite social partners and political parties to participate in this process of rethinking and assessing the type of measures that, in their view, are necessary for the next phase, so that we can have as much consensus as possible on to the performance of our Region,” announced the Vasco Cordeiro.

At this meeting, the President of the Government stated that nearly five million Euros will be invested in the material deemed necessary to carry out 400 thousand tests for the screening of the novel coronavirus, thus anticipating eventual future needs.

This material will arrive in the Region gradually, given the constraints on the demand for this type of products in international markets.

"The Regional Government has been endowing the Regional Civil Protection Service with the means that, according to the possible evolution of this pandemic, will further enhance our capacity to take action as soon as possible," stressed the President of the Government.
This represents an investment of more than five million Euros. It adds up to the 9.3 million Euros already invested by the Regional Government in personal protective equipment that has already begun arriving in the Region, following the Azores Airlines flight operations to China.

During this meeting, the President of the Government also highlighted several measures that have been implemented in the Region over the last weeks, not only in the scope of public health, but also in terms of social support, employment support and economic revitalisation with the aim of providing the Region with all the conditions to begin its recovery phase.

“With regard to the Region's economy, our strategy has been very clear and objective. Firstly, we have created all the conditions for Azorean companies to have significantly more support than the remaining companies in the country. We have also ensured that all regional support is complementary to national aid in order to maximise the availability of resources to Azorean companies," stressed Vasco Cordeiro.

In his speech, the President of the Government praised the civic spirit of the Azoreans who “quickly realised what was at stake here and are, generally, complying with all the measures - some quite harsh and disruptive of our daily lives- that have been implemented over the past few weeks.”

Moreover, Vasco Cordeiro stressed that measures to protect public health and the health of each Azorean are based on technical and clinical criteria duly substantiated by a wide group of specialists, coordinated by the Regional Secretary for health, who monitor the evolution of this pandemic in the Region on a daily basis.
