Ponta Delgada ,  March 31, 2016

Sant'Ana Garden and Capitães Generais Palace with summer schedule from April 1

The garden of Sant'Ana Palace in Ponta Delgada and the Capitães General Palace in Angra do Heroísmo will be open to the public from Friday, April 1, with extended summer hours, from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 AM and 5 PM, including holidays; they close on Monday.

The garden of Sant'Ana Palace is an example of 19th century landscape art, marked by a high level of historical and cultural integrity. It occupies a prominent place in the history of gardens due to the integrity of the heritage identity and quality of the landscape.

The greenhouses, the garden, the old stables and the walls lined with tiles are some of the elements built amid the wide variety of flowers and colours, large trees and exotic and subtropical species.

In the southern part, there is a lake, a rose garden and beautiful flower beds that conduct the visitor to the palace's front staircase in neoclassical style.

The Sant'Ana Palace and the garden were built in the second half of the 19th century by Morgado José Jácome Correia. It remained in the family until 1977, when it was purchased by the Presidency of the Government.

The Capitães Generais Palace, one of the three palaces of the Presidency, continues to play an important political and administrative role. It is the venue where the Council of the Government meets on the island of Terceira, in addition to hosting several services of the Vice-Presidency.

In the 17th century, this building was a Jesuit College. From 1766, and for 64 years, it has been the residence of General Captains and Civil Governors.

Visitors can enjoy a collection consisting of valuable pieces of sculpture, furniture, painting and ceramics that evidence the rich history of this former convent.

Whether visiting individually or in organised groups, it is possible to schedule a guided tour at the email address [email protected] or by telephone 295 402 300.

The Church of Santo Inácio de Loyola, also known as Colégio Church, may be part of the guided tour.
