Angra do Heroísmo ,  March 01, 2018

Revision of Civil Protection Emergency Plan has been ongoing for a year and will be approved soon, announces Vasco Cordeiro

The President of the Regional Government announced today that the revision of the Regional Civil Protection Emergency Plan, which has been ongoing for a year, is already in the process of being concluded. It is expected to be approved by the Council of the Government in April.

"We are about to conclude this internal work, which will soon be submitted for opinion to a group of entities. We believe that the revision of the Regional Civil Protection Emergency Plan will be approved in April; the current plan dates from 2007," said Vasco Cordeiro.

The President of the Government spoke after participating in the celebrations of the World Civil Defence Day. The event was promoted by the Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service (SRPCBA) in partnership with Angra do Heroísmo City Hall, involving the participation of children and young people from various schools of Terceira Island.

"For the Government of the Azores, one of the fundamental aspects concerns the needs to foster, from a very young age, this idea of being us, each citizens, to promote these behaviours, practices and awareness with regard to Civil Protection," said Vasco Cordeiro.

In this context, the President of the Government pointed out the example of the 2016/2017 school year with the promotion of about 70 actions in several areas linked to Civil Protection in regional schools, involving nearly five thousand students.

"In this school year, we are also organising, for the first time, Basic Civil Protection Courses in schools. They are specifically addressed to the School Boards as well as to those in charge of Civil Protection Clubs are intended to reinforce the importance of Civil Protection from a very young age," announced the President of the Government.

Vasco Cordeiro also pointed out that the Region has also created Courses on Civil Protection Planning and Emergency Management directed to municipal agents with the aim of reinforcing the coordination between different agents in this area.

In this context, there are plans to carry out 15 actions in Planning and Management, covering nearly 300 agents from all municipalities of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

After noting several planned or ongoing interventions in regional fire stations, the President of the Government took the opportunity to greet and praise all those involved in Civil Protection in the most different levels.

"On this day, I would like to greet all those who, individually or collectively, are part of this Civil Protection system. It encompasses not only the SRPCBA but also fire brigades, municipal Civil Protection services, several entities including Cruz Vermelha, and the Armed Forces. The latter play a very important and meritorious role in our Region that is recognised by all Azoreans," said Vasco Cordeiro.
