President of the Government begins visit to São Jorge with opening of new cold storage unit

The President of the Government began today the statutory visit to São Jorge with the opening of the new Cold Storage Unit in Velas, where he stressed that the investment in infrastructures, qualification and sustainability of resources are the three pillars of the strategy pursued to safeguard the future of Fisheries.

"All this has been done bearing in mind the income and future of fishers, and our ability to always help building this future," said Vasco Cordeiro. He spoke at the opening of this cold storage unit, which represented an investment of about one million Euros.

With the aim of ensuring the future of fisheries in the Region, the President of the Government considered that infrastructures are one of the pillars of this strategy. In this regard, he pointed out the example of investments in the cold storage units in Horta, Vila do Porto, Madalena and Lajes das Flores as well as works in the ramp of Porto Formoso port, the fishing centre of Madalena port and the Topo port, also on São Jorge.

"The second pillar concerns qualification, which should begin with fishers themselves, through the training initiatives that have been promoted and that have already covered more than a hundred professionals" Vasco Cordeiro noted, assuring that the Maritime School plays a fundamental role in the strengthening of this pillar.

According to the President of the Government, sustainability is the third pillar to safeguard the future of fisheries. It begins with the very commitment of fishing professionals, who "are at the forefront of this commitment to resource management, whether in defining regional quotas or in creating marine protected areas."

At the beginning of the visit to São Jorge, Vasco Cordeiro highlighted, on the other hand, that the Government's direct investment on the island of São Jorge amounted to over 213 million Euros between 2013 and 2019.

"This does not mean that everything is running smoothly and, in the case of São Jorge, we have to do more to provide an outlet for the fish caught on that island," the President of the Government said, adding that the "credibility of our commitment towards improvement comes from what we have already done and have already proved."

"Between 2012 and 2019, the number of passengers disembarking on the island of São Jorge increased by nearly 70 percent. From 2016 to 2019, this increase stood at 25 percent. The fact that we have managed to do this also gives us confidence in our commitment to further improve and do more in terms of what remains to be done," said the President of the Government.

The Velas new cold storage unit has a 40-tonne frozen food storage chamber, a 20-tonne refrigerated storage chamber, a 10-tonne freezing tunnel per cycle and an air-conditioned area for fish preparation and processing.

In addition, a new feature was added to this unit with the installation of equipment with capacity to produce two tonnes of ice per day and store up to four tonnes.
