Santa Cruz da Graciosa ,  July 10, 2018

Investments in Graciosa airport control tower and terminal are example of investments in regional cohesion, says Vasco Cordeiro

The President of the Government of the Azores announced today that the new airport control tower and terminal on Graciosa Island represent an overall investment of nearly 5.3 million Euros, being examples of a very "clear investment in regional cohesion."

"These investments are not only limited to what they mean from the standpoint of interventions in infrastructures. They also hold a political meaning that is embodied in this clear and precise investment in regional cohesion," said Vasco Cordeiro.

The President of the Government spoke during the presentation of the preliminary project for the construction of the new Graciosa air terminal building that took place after the visit to the construction works of the new control tower.

At the beginning of the statutory visit to Graciosa Island, Vasco Cordeiro stated that these two interventions seize the potential of the new dynamics that the island is living from an economic standpoint, as evidenced by a significant increase in air mobility.

"This is what we mean when we create the conditions on Graciosa Island, similar to other islands, so as to give future prospects in terms of air mobility," said the President of the Government. In this context, he recalled that the development of the air accessibility in the Region has been vertiginous over the last years, not only in the flight offer but also in the number of visitors.

In his speech, Vasco Cordeiro considered that these two investments, as well as others underway on various islands, demonstrate that the Azorean Government is well aware of the need to adapt several infrastructures in the Region to the current situation.

"From a political perspective, these interventions convey the importance, not only in terms of public investments but also in terms of creating the conditions for the private economy to improve the conditions for its success," said the government official.

The new control tower, an investment of about 1.4 million Euros to be completed at the beginning of next year, will be equipped with modern technology. It will also congregate in a single building several services that were scattered around the Graciosa aerodrome.

As regards the future terminal building, an investment of around 3.9 million Euros, it is intended to ensure better comfort conditions for passengers and significantly reinforce the operating capacity, allowing the dispatch of two Dash Q400 flights at the same time. The intervention also complied with the regulations and recommendations issued by the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC).

In addition to the building, the investment will comprise the acquisition of the screening and security equipment, outdoor arrangements, the remodelling of the parking lot, the demolition of the existing terminal building and the installation of a firefighting network.
