Government's investments ensure effective waste management solutions in the Azores

The President of the Government visited the works for the sealing of the dump and the construction of an inert landfill, an investment of nearly 340 thousand Euros that falls within the policies pursued to ensure effective and appropriate solutions for waste management in the Region.

After Vasco Cordeiro's visit to this work, included in the Government's statutory visit to Corvo Island, the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and the Environment stressed that the waste management policies under implementation are "a small but important revolution" taking place in this area.

Luís Neto Viveiros explained that the sealing of dumps and landfills will be followed by "the construction and entry into operation of Waste Processing Centres (CPR)" on seven islands of the archipelago, as scheduled.

Since 2012, when there were only two CPR in operation and several unlicensed dumps and landfills in the archipelago, the Government has been concluding the construction of seven Waste Centres, which represent a global investment of 40 million Euros. Overall, a total of four dumps have already been sealed on the islands of Graciosa and Flores at a cost of 1.8 million Euros.

Currently, according to the Regional Public Works Charter, there are several ongoing contract works, including the sealing of Corvo dump and the construction of the inert landfill, an investment of about 400 thousand Euros, and the sealing of Santa Maria dump.

The public tenders concerning the contract works for the sealing of São Jorge and Faial landfills have already been launched.

The political choices made by the Government of the Azores in waste management are intended to reduce landfill waste disposal to a minimum as well as to seal disposal sites and carry out landscape recovery interventions, with environmental and public health gains.

These policies also generate gains in terms of business opportunities for the private sector and the creation of new jobs.
