Government presents Azores Maritime School to the President of the Republic

The Government of the Azores presented to the President of the Republic the project for the Azores Maritime School, under construction in the city of Horta, will respond to the strategic goal of providing the Region with a quality vocational training institution certified in several areas of maritime economy.

This project, which represents a public investment of around 4.5 million Euros, was presented Monday during the visit of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Vasco Cordeiro to the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores-

In September 2016, the President of the Government presided over the ceremony to launch the construction works of this school, which will also redevelop several buildings that belonged to the former Horta Naval Radio Station.

Reinforcing the crucial role of Faial in the maritime sector, the Azores Sea School aims to attract trainees and professionals from different areas by creating more employment as well as social and economic dynamics on this island and, through them, in the Azores.

Speaking to journalists, Vasco Cordeiro restated that the Regional Government has been working to safeguard the Region's interests in the management of the Sea. In this regard, he noted that recent statements by the Minister of the sector are line with what has been long defended by the Azorean Government on this matter.

"Obviously this is not enough. It is necessary to amend the legislation and that is what we are working on," said the President of the Government. According to him, this legal consecration will allow us to implement more specific aspects of this understanding as well as to safeguard the interests of the Region in the future, namely in the management of its maritime space.
