Government Outlines new Agricultural Land-Management Perimeter in São Jorge Island
The Regional Government of the Azores outlined a new Agricultural Land-
Management Perimeter (POA) that encompasses 1,723 hectares of land in the Santo Antão/Topo. Its purpose is to promote the integrated development of the agricultural infrastructures in this locality of S. Jorge Island.
The legislation proposed by the Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry concerning the new POA entrusts IROA, a state entity, with the task of implementing the land-parcelling plan and with building new agricultural infrastructures, such as roads and water and electricity supply networks.
This governmental policy was substantiated by several studies of the eastern part of the island, which revealed the need to “reduce structural debilities and maximise benefits” by pursuing an integrated policy of agricultural modernisation.
