New submarine cable network could boost creation of Digital Platform in the North Atlantic

The Regional Director for Public Works and Communications, Frederico Sousa, said yesterday in Lisbon that the new submarine cable network providing communications between the Mainland Portugal, the Azores and Madeira (CAM) could boost the creation of a Digital Platform in the North Atlantic.

Speaking after the third meeting of the Working Group in charge of analysing the replacement of CAM equipment, Frederico Sousa stated that "several companies have been making presentations in the last two meetings held by this working group."

In this regard, the Regional Director stated that these same companies have “special relevance and acknowledged experience in such projects, namely technology manufacturing companies, neutral telecommunications operators and transatlantic submarine cable promoters. This is the case of the company EllaLink.”

The working group also discussed the project's opportunities to apply for European funds and continued with the joint reflection on the actions to be taken in order to accomplish the stipulated targets.

In this regard, the Regional Director emphasised that the Regional Government advocates an “integrated solution with redundancy and independent connections, so as to defend the public interest and to ensure the conditions for the creation of a Digital Platform in the North Atlantic that can harness connections to other submarine cables."

This Working Group was set up with the aim of studying and analysing the most appropriate technical and financial solution for the timely replacement of CAM Cables. It includes representatives of the Governments of the Republic, the Azores and Madeira as well as of ANACOM (national communications authority).
