Ponta Delgada ,  July 24, 2019

President of the Government received European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation

The President of the Government, Vasco Cordeiro, received today the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas, at the beginning of a visit to the Azores that "comes at a good time.” In fact, it will be an opportunity to show the European Commission the work that is being carried out by regional public and private entities in these areas in close coordination and with the support of the National Government.

“This visit comes at a good time. It will be an opportunity to highlight the work and efforts that have been done, not only in what concerns the Regional Government but also the University of the Azores, research centres and companies in the field of research and knowledge and in the establishment of links between research and the business fabric,” said Vasco Cordeiro.

Following the meeting with Commissioner Carlos Moedas in Ponta Delgada, the President of the Azorean Government assured that there are areas where this link has already reached a certain level. There are also plans to further enhance this potential in the sectors where it is yet to be accomplished.

“Having the possibility of making the European Commission, through Commissioner Carlos Moedas, acquainted with what we are doing in a Region seeking to develop and create opportunities in these areas is a source of satisfaction," highlighted Vasco Cordeiro.

Speaking to journalists, the President of the Government assured, on the other hand, that the Region, through its strategic position, can contribute to the projection of the European Union in the fields of Science and Research.

"The sea, volcanology, climate change and climate study are areas where the Azores have unique conditions to strengthen the European Union's position and ambition in this field," said Vasco Cordeiro.

At the President of the Government's invitation, the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation began this Wednesday a three-day visit to the Azores, an official mission closing the Science Roadmap that has been promoted in several Portuguese regions and cities by this European official.
