Azorean Government marks International Migrants Day

The Government of the Azores marks the International Migrants Day on Monday, December 18, with the organisation of an initiative. It intends to promote and disseminate the cultural diversity that exists in the Region, promoting dialogue, socialisation moments and the sharing of living experiences between the Azorean community and migrants.

These celebrations will take place at "Casa do Povo" in the village of Criação Velha in the municipality of Madalena, Pico Island, starting at 8:30 PM. The event features musical performances by local artists, from Faial Island and other nationalities residing in the Azores, a session of traditional tales from various countries, exhibition of works by immigrant artists living on the island, and moment of intercultural exchange among all those present.

According to data from the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) regarding 2016, there are 400 immigrants from 40 different nationalities residing on the island of Pico.

The celebrations of the International Migrants Day, organised by the Regional Directorate for Communities, fall within the Regional Government's action and its policy to promote the fruitful relation between the different peoples and cultures that currently converge in the archipelago. Moreover, they stimulate and foster interculturality, while paying tribute to the life path of migrants.

Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000, the International Migrants Day aims to raise awareness among the international community for the rights of migrants around the world.
