The President of the Government of the Azores will meet the President of the European Commission in Brussels this week.
The meeting with José Manuel Barroso, to take place next Wednesday by 5 PM, was requested by the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR) to discuss the structuring of the cohesion policy and the financial perspectives of the European Union for the 2014-2020.
Carlos César will participate in this meeting at the invitation of Claudio Martini, President of the CPMR, in a delegation that also includes political leaders from other CPMR regions, such as Carwyn Jones, the First Minister of Wales (UK), Jean-Yves Le Drian , President of Brittany (France), Ramon Siso, President of Murcia (Spain), Gert-Inge Anderson, President of Västra Götaland (Sweden), Jaroslaw Dworzanski, Marshal of Podlaskie (Poland), Godwin Grima, Principal Secretary of Gozo (Malta ) and Gunn Helgesen, Mayor of the County of Telemark (Norway).
The need for a strong cohesion policy after 2013, endowed with adequate financial resources as well, the greater involvement of regions, the development of an ambitious interpretation of the principle of territorial cohesion, the integrated maritime policy and the presentation of the political position of CPMR, “Regions, responsible partners in a Europe facing difficulties,”  will be some of the issues to be addressed at  the meeting between a restricted group and the President of the European Commission.
One should remind that the President of the Government of the Azores took over the Presidency of the Commission of the CPMR Islands in May.
Carlos César is also a member, on behalf of the Outermost Regions, of the Political Bureau of the European organisation for regional cooperation, which brings together more than 160 coastal, peripheral and insular regions from twenty-eight European states.
