Pico Museum hosts conference on "'Mistérios' of Pico Island"

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Pico Museum, promotes a conference to be delivered by João Carlos Nunes on "'Mistérios' of Pico Island: volcanoes that shaped Man and marked History."

João Carlos Nunes will discuss the peculiarities of these eruptions and the influence they have had on the population of Pico Island. The event will take place at the Whaling Museum in Lajes do Pico on February 3 and is part of the celebrations of the 300th anniversary of the February 1718 volcanic eruption.

Since the discovery and settlement of this island, documents in historical collections mention the occurrence of three volcanic eruptions that gave rise to popularly known "Mistérios" (lava fields created by volcanic eruptions) in Prainha (1562-64), Santa Luzia and São João (1718) and Silveira (1720).

João Carlos Nunes holds a degree in Geology from the University of Porto and a PhD in Volcanology from the University of the Azores. He is the Scientific Director of INOVA - Institute of Technological Innovation of the Azores and Scientific Coordinator of the Azores Geopark, which is part of UNESCO world network of geoparks.

This initiative of Pico Museum, organised in partnership with Pico Natural Park, the Azores Geopark and the Village Council of São João, includes the presentation of a video on the conference theme.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
