"Enlightened warming" raises youngsters' awareness for the effects of global warming

The Regional Secretary for Science, Technology and Infrastructures stressed today the importance of leisure and educational activities that promote scientific culture in the school community.

José Contente spoke at the opening session of the event "Enlightened warming," a theatre play that aims to the raise the awareness of youngsters for environmental issues. The Regional Secretary stressed that the Regional Government supports this type of initiatives because "they include a scientific component, addressing issues related to global warming, and alert people for the true existence of the global warming phenomenon."

Speaking to the school community, the government official reiterated the Regional Secretary's interest in promoting events targeted at the dissemination of scientific culture in different forms. In this specific context the message is conveyed through a theatre play that draws attention to the problem and consequences of global warming.

José Contente called for the awareness of youngsters for the effects of greenhouse gases so that they may play an active role in reducing the emission of polluting gases into the atmosphere as well as to become aware of the consequences brought by climate change in the future of humanity, which may "lead to catastrophic stations such as droughts or floods.”

"Theatre is a form of conveying this message to a school audience in a clear, funny and expressive way," the government official added, saying that these experiences are often provided as a form of consolidating the knowledge learned at schools.

The "Enlightened Warming" sessions will cover nearly two thousand students on the islands of São Miguel, Terceira and Horta.
With this message, the Regional Secretary believes that these youngsters will better understand which behaviour, actions and measures should be taken in the future either in a personal level or in society, if they come to have decision-making responsibilities."
