Regional Government participates in international conference to share good energy practices

The Regional Secretariat for Energy, Environment and Tourism, through the Regional Directorate for Energy, will participate in the seventh international conference on energy transition in the southern and eastern Mediterranean countries on September 26. At the event, the government official will present the pioneering measures and actions implemented by the Azorean Government in the energy sector to boost its decarbonisation.

Held under the title "Sustainable Energy for Islands and Remote Areas: Frontrunners for Energy Transition in the Euro-Mediterranean Region," the event will be held in Greece. It is organised by the Mediterranean Association of National Agencies for Energy Management (MEDENER) in partnership with the Clean Energy for EU Islands Secretariat, involving the participation of several regions such as Spain or Malta.

According to the premise launched by MEDENER, the islands' size and insularity lead to a strong dependence on fossil fuels in sectors such as electricity and mobility. These challenges are overcome by these territories by using innovative solutions and technologies that can be replicated in the Mediterranean countries with similar realities. In this context, the Azores were invited to share the good practices that have been implemented in the Region.

This is a sharing of energy knowledge that reflects the added value the Azores bring to Europe in this sector. It is also evident in the Region's growing involvement in international cooperation projects, working groups and consortia aimed improving energy efficiency and the optimisation of natural resources in the European Economic Area. The main goal of this strategy is to promote the transition to a low carbon economy that guarantees an increasingly clean, safe, competitive and accessible energy for all Azoreans.

The Azores have been recognised as one of the leading regions to present their energy transition agenda among more than 2,200 EU islands and archipelagos under the Clean Energy for EU Islands initiative. Currently, it is developing the Azorean Energy Strategy under the 2030 horizon to outline policies that respond to the needs of an island and outermost region, seizing the potential offered by its natural resources and emerging technologies in the energy sector.
