The University of the Azores continues to be one of the privileged partners of the Regional Government “in major projects, such as Green Island, which aims to ensure the energy sustainability of the Region, but also in other projects intended to establish our green economy based on the replacement of the carbon market,” stressed the Regional Secretary for the Science, Technology and Infrastructures on Monday. 

José Contente, who presided over the opening session of the International Curse on Energy, Environment and Sustainability, mentioned that the Regional Government is pleased to join the event, adding that “this year we are supporting 34 similar events, together with the University of the Azores, in a global investment of 360 thousand Euros, which demonstrates the proximity and the ongoing investment of the Government in the context of the emergence of new challenges to our collective future.”

The government official called the attention of those attending the event for the potentialities of the European project Galileo in the future of environmental monitoring through the GMES system (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security).

The Government of the Azores considers GMES as a EU strategic project, being the second major space project, after GALILEO. GMES intended to manage sustainable development and improve the monitoring of the threshold for the use of natural resources at a European and global level by enhancing their management and ensuring the safety of citizens. “These are the goals that the Azores intends to achieve at a regional level and in the context of the European community,” said the Regional Secretary.

The International Course, which is taking place at the University of the Azores from July 18 to 21, involves the study of cases regarding the application of the principles of sustainability and the efficient management in the field of energy and natural resources “with strategy of monitoring the threshold for the use of resources and optimising their management,” stressed the Regional Secretary for Science, Technology and Infrastructures.
