Vasco Cordeiro congratulates Azorean teams participating in the 23rd Island Games

The President of the Government congratulated today the regional teams that have secured the Azores third place in the 23rd Island Games that were recently held in Bastia, France.

"It was with great satisfaction that I received the news of the excellent performance of the Azorean athletes participating in these Island Games and the dignified and honourable way in which they represented the Autonomous Region of the Azores throughout the several days of competition," stressed Vasco Cordeiro in his message of congratulations.

According to the President of the Government, the results achieved by the Azores "demonstrate once again the quality of the training provided in various sports, which is largely due to efforts and commitment of coaches and club leaders."

Overall, the Azores ranked third among 13 regions from several countries, having won two gold medals in Swimming and Table Tennis, three silver medals in Athletics, Football and Volleyball, and a bronze medal in Karate.

In the 23rd Island Games, the Azores were represented in the following sports: Athletics (men's and women's), Football (men's), Judo (men's and women's), Karate (men's and women's), Swimming (men's and women's), Tennis (men's and women's) and Table Tennis (men's and women's), Sailing (men's and women's) and Volleyball (women's).

In these nine sports, the Azorean teams were made up of 83 athletes from seven islands, who were accompanied by 18 coaches and leaders as well as by members of the Regional Directorate for Sport.

The Island Games are primarily intended to create a spirit of European citizenship in the context of the Olympic ideal by passing on to our youth, through Sport, a message based on fair play and respect for others. Moreover, this event also brings together young people from different origins, but who share a common background: insularity.
