Calheta ,  October 10, 2017

Regional Government has planned health investments amounting to 15 million Euros until the end of the term

The Regional Secretary for Health stated on São Jorge that everything is being done so that the intervention in Calheta Health Centre may begin next year and announced a series of other interventions throughout this term amounting to 15 million Euros.

"The rehabilitation works of health centres in Santa Cruz das Flores and Lajes do Pico are due to start next year," said Rui Luís. He added that, until the end of the term, the Government plans to restore some services at Divino Espírito Santo Hospital in Ponta Delgada as well as to carry out investments in Block C building of Horta Hospital and in Faial Health Unit.

Rui Luís spoke at the end of a visit to the remodelling works of Calheta Health Centre, also attended by the President of the Government, Vasco Cordeiro. It included the unveiling of the accreditation plate of this health facility.

In his speech, the Regional Secretary stated that “the São Jorge Health Unit registered last year a growth of 26% in the number of visits and consultations carried out by specialists."

At regional level, Rui Luís pointed out some indicators such as the increase of human resources above 18% in the number of doctors and around 8% in the number of nurses.

With regard to surgery waiting lists, the volume of surgical interventions between 2012 and 2016 increased from 13 thousand to about 25 thousand, with a rate of variation at 80%.

"Naturally, this positive development is due to the global and concerted effort, first and foremost, of all professionals in all areas of the sector and this is reflected in the overall indicators of the Regional Health Service," said Rui Luís.

On the other hand, the Secretary for Health stated that the quality certification promoted by the National Accreditation Programme reduces clinical risks, promotes the continuous improvement of services, and the confidence and safety of the users.

"The first step towards the accreditation process in the Region was awarded to the Faial Health Unit. Since then, six health centres in the Azores have already undergone this rigorous process and have been duly accredited, namely the health centres of Praia da Vitória, Angra do Heroísmo, Horta, Vila Franca do Campo, Velas and, now, Calheta," said the government official.

Rui Luís also highlighted the results of the cooperation between the Regional Secretariat for Health and the General Directorate for Health.

"We are, therefore, before a goal that is in line with what has been the purpose of the Regional Health Service, i.e., the continuous improvement of the care provided and the increased satisfaction of patients and professionals," said the government official.

According to Rui Luís, the accreditation of the two health centres on São Jorge Island and the remodelling works of Calheta Health Centre, estimated at around one million euros and due to be completed in 2018, are examples of the health response that the Azorean Government wants to continue providing to São Jorge islanders.
