Azorean fishers benefit from transfer of 120 tonnes of bigeye tuna from Spain to Portugal

The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology stated today that Spain has agreed to transfer 120 tonnes of bigeye tuna to Portugal, stressing that this is "good news for Azorean fishers, who will be able to continue to catch this species for some time."

Gui Menezes pointed out that the National Government, through the Ministry of the Sea, has negotiated the transfer of this quota with the Spanish Government, "as requested by the regional governments of the Azores and Madeira."

The Regional Secretary recalled that Portugal's Total Allowable Capture (TAC) for bigeye tuna is set at 3,717 tonnes, of which 3,700 tonnes have been caught during this harvest, corresponding to 99.7% of the national quota.

In the Region, 1,843 tonnes of bigeye tuna have been caught up to date, which corresponds to nearly 3.8 million Euros generated on the first sale, representing a growth of 446% compared to the same period of 2017.
