Nautical Tourism reinforces importance of the sea in the development of tourism in the Azores

The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism stressed in Lisbon the "increased importance" of the sea in the development of tourism in the Azores, reinforcing the "growing relevance" of nautical tourism, one of the priority products of the destination according to the Strategic and Marketing Plan set for the sector.

"We have been able to optimise our resources and our tourism products, namely the sea. The latter has attracted some market niches and increased tourism flows, thus contributing to the consolidation of Azores as an Active Nature Destination," said Marta Guerreiro. She spoke at the presentation of the Network of Portuguese Nautical Stations and the WAOH! Route.

According to the government official, "the Regional Government has also been investing in the development of the sea tourism cluster and the organisation of national and international events in the Region. This investment is evidenced by the number of competitions held in the archipelago in recent years under national and international circuits as well as those we expect to organise in the future."

The Secretary for Tourism noted that the "quality and diversity of the tourism offer" has been consolidated through the structuring of its products, which has actively contributed to the promotion of the destination" as a priority goal.

In this context, she pointed out, as example, the regional network of marinas as far as it generates "added value" in "the development of yachting and recreational boating at various levels" by attracting new markets, increasing the occupancy rates of regional marinas and reducing the seasonality of the activity. Additionally, it plays a relevant role in "projecting the Azores as a destination of excellence for their geographical location in the Atlantic."

Marta Guerreiro also reiterated the importance of private agents who, "having the tools to boost their offer of products and services," may "strengthen their activity" and, consequently, contribute "economic growth and better working conditions."
