Government committed to promote the role of Sea in regional economy

The interventions that the Government of the Azores has been developing on several islands to provide them with better maritime infrastructures represents a clear commitment to enhance the role of the Sea in Region as “this is a strategy which is not confined to the provision of physical infrastructures,” stressed the Regional Secretary for the Economy on Pico Island on Thursday.
Vasco Cordeiro spoke during the ceremony to award a contract work for the construction of the port infrastructures and the renewal works to improve the shelter conditions of the Madalena Port, and reminded that the Government of the Azores has carried out various works related to the Sea on all islands; some already are at implementation stage or at project stage.
All these interventions, stressed the Regional Secretary allow “to support the options that have been taken with the purpose claim the Sea as part of the economic development of the Region.”
According to Vasco Cordeiro, “this a strategy that is not only associated to the provision of infrastructures, but also to a number of other options, such as the replacement process of new vessels for the passenger maritime transport on the Central Group islands or the  revival of the Madalena Shipyards.”
After the completion of the awarded works, a public call for tenders for the interventions in the passenger terminal in the Madalena Port will be launched, followed by the construction of a nautical centre.
The contract works for the construction of port infrastructures and the renewal works to improve the shelter conditions of the Madalena Port have an expected completion period of 24 months, representing an investment of 14 million Euros.
