Marta Guerreiro says tourism has strongly contributed to job creation in the Azores
The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism revealed in Ponta Delgada that, among the approximately “10 thousand jobs created in the Region” since 2012, “about four thousand were created in the accommodation and restaurant sector,” pointing out that “tourism has provided an extremely positive contribution to job creation.”
This sector has been responsible for "43% of the new jobs created since 2012 until now, Marta Guerreiro said, stressing that "this contribution grew from 43% to 76%" in the current legislative term.
"These data demonstrate the increasing strength of the qualification of companies in this sector, but also the confidence they have placed in the Azores," stressed the government official. In this regard, she added that they also "prove that tourism has managed to be one of the main employers in the Region, reaching an ever increasing number of families in all the municipalities of the archipelago.”
As executive power, it is up to us to create conditions to boost investment on our nine islands,” said the Secretary for Tourism. According to her, “economic growth and the improvement of the quality of life of people who regard tourism as an option for prosperity show that we have managed to put the Azoreans at the centre of investments.”
The Regional Secretary pointed out people as the “main asset," emphasising that "they are the ones that strengthen the Azores Destination, and for that reason, the training of human resources has been a priority of today."
"We want more jobs, we want better jobs and we want qualified people in the sector," said the government official.
“The positive development of tourism we have seen over the last few years is the result of the joint work between the Regional Government and all the agents in the field, who give shape to a policy that can only yield these extraordinary results with the involvement of people, thus turning us into a Sustainable Tourism Destination," stressed the Regional Secretary.
Marta Guerreiro spoke Wednesday at the opening of the "Casas Amarelas" tourist resort, which she considered “a true example of how we are - public and private entities - committed to accommodating with quality those who choose the Azores for their holiday destination.”
“Whenever these spaces open to the public, we are filled with pride and satisfaction at seeing these investments made by private individuals, who know - and well - to seize of the potential that the tourism sector offers these days," said the government official.
the Regional Secretary, this is “another project that dignifies our tourism offer, proving, once again, the importance of this sector for the economy of the city of Ponta Delgada, the island of São Miguel and the Azores.”
