Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre presents diversified activity programme in September

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre, develops an activity programme that includes, among other initiatives, an art and comedy exhibition, artistic residencies, guided tours and concerts.

The month of September concludes the cycle of guided tours designated as "From the same hands," which promotes the collection of Arquipélago and the cultural assets belonging to different institutions from São Miguel Island.

The fourth and last guided tour will take place Saturday, September 2, at 10:30 AM and will focus on the painting by Maria José Cavaco belonging to the series "My Flying Houses # 23, 2001," owned by the Mayor's Office of Vila Franca do Campo Town Hall. The work entitled "“A hazy medium of mist 4, 2013" by the same author will be displayed on the 1st floor of Arquipélago Shop and may be visited until September 30.

On September 2, 3 and 6, the Contemporary Arts Centre hosts the ISCTE International Summer School of Architecture. This year's edition will focus on housing and will be held under the title "MOYTIRRA– Sketch Design for deep-sea mining labour’s housing." The works will be presented to the public on September 6 at 4:30 PM.

This school includes, among other activities, masterclasses conducted by architect Jorge Kol de Carvalho, professor Mónica Pacheco (ISCTE - School) and Ricardo Camacho (Northeastern University - Boston) as well as the presentation of the documentary "Bread" by André Laranjinha next Sunday, September 3.

On September 15, Arquipélago will open the exhibition entitled "Risible Enigma of Normal Life," which features multiple forms of comedy through contemporary art. It is curated by Mark Durden and David Campbell, founding members of the collective Common Culture.

On September 22, soprano Ana Maria Pinto and pianist Joana Resende present their first album entitled "Anterianas" at the Blackbox at 9:30 PM; their work focuses on several figures such as Antero de Quental, Luís de Freitas Branco and Franz Schubert.

This month, Arquipélago hosts two artistic residencies. The first will be held under the title "In the Absence of My Body" from September 4 to 13.This is a performative project by Marina Nabais that reflects the artist's research and movement developed over the past 20 years as choreographer and dancer.

The second residence, designated as "The New Art of Making Ruins," takes places between September 25 and October 4. It will be conducted by choreographer Beatriz Cantinho in collaboration with composer Diogo Alvim and musician and artist Ricardo Jacinto. It is inspired on the documentary "Havana - The New Art of Making Ruins" by Florian Borchmeyer and Matthias Hentscheler.

Also in September, Educational Service of Arquipélago will launch an activity book the school year 2017/2018. On September 16, it promotes "The picture within the picture," an activity intended to disseminate the work by Azores artist Maria José Cavaco under the cycle of summer guided tours "From the Same Hands."

In this activity, participants, departing from the work "A Hazy Medium of Mist 4, 2013" will think and act on the idea of representing a space within another space.

Registrations for the activities promoted by the Educational Service should be made at the address www.arquipelagocentrodeartes.azores.gov.pt or emailed to [email protected].

Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 AM to 6 PM.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
