The Vice-President of the Government, Sérgio Ávila, attended today the ceremony to lay the first stone of the Community Centre in the village of São Sebastião in Angra do Heroísmo, where he stressed the important role played by the local village council.
According to Sérgio Ávila, the work that has been developed, whether by the village council whether by the Angra do Heroísmo City Hall, is “a good example of the efforts undertaken by the local power to improve the citizens’ quality of life.”
The work which started yesterday and whose ceremony was integrated on the Village of São Sebastião Day will provide various services, such as a library, a training room, a multimedia space, a socialising room for the elderly, a free time workshop for children and youngsters, a PSP (Public Safety Police) office, a barber shop and a telephone booth, in a 590 square meter space.
With a global investment of nearly 500 thousand Euros and a completion period of 10 months, the Community Centre is, for the Vice-President, a work that dignifies a joint effort between the regional and the local administration.
“Building infrastructures such as this one, whose utility will indubitably benefit the local population, as well as the entire island, is only possible with the understanding and cooperation between the Regional Government, municipalities and the village councils.”
Sérgio Ávila challenged yesterday all the village councils and municipalities of the Region to follow this example, assuring that the Azorean Government will always be available to cooperate with the local councils to improve the quality of life of all the Azoreans.
